Greeting

Institute of Maritime Law was established in October 2007 as one of the Project Research Institutes under the Comprehensive Research Organization in Waseda University. Owing to warm support from both inside and outside of the university, the Institute has achieved tangible results in all of our three major activities - maritime law research, operation of graduate-level maritime law course, and international academic exchange. We have currently over 50 members including researchers in other Asian countries, aiming to make a continuous contribution to development of maritime law research and education.
Needless to say, Japan is one of the world's major nations whose economic activities are deeply related to the ocean. Other such nations have the institute of maritime law in universities such as the University of Southampton in the UK, Tulane University in the US, and many national universities in France, and these nations deeply engage in comprehensive study and education of maritime law and policy. Our Institution is the first research institute in Japan that can study comprehensive maritime law and maritime affairs through business-academia collaboration. We would appreciate kind support from various industries such as insurance, trading firms, and manufactures as well as maritime shipping and dock industries, and cooperation of maritime specialists and maritime law practitioners.
Here is our future plan. We wish to expand “East Asian Maritime Law Forum,” which is an international research exchange between China, Korea and Japan, has been hosted by each country so far every year since 2008. We hope to expand this event in the future. We have produced graduates of our graduate program for businessmen since 2010. These graduates make great success as a professional of maritime law in various companies and firms. We continue our best effort to produce such promising graduates. In 2012, a book titled “The Law of Maritime Collision (senpaku shototsu ho)” was published for the first time in five decades. This is a fruit of one of our study groups. We have so far seven study groups: ship financing, maritime law history, maritime insurance, maritime law cases, foreign maritime law, maritime criminal law, and law of maritime collision. Basically, all study groups are open to the public. We hope this website connects our activities and those who are interested in our activities.
